Trump pays E. Jean Carroll $5.6 million after failing to delay the judgment
President Trump has paid writer E. Jean Carroll roughly $5.6 million to satisfy the judgment in the sexual-abuse and defamation case she brought against him. The money changed hands three years after a New York jury found Trump liable for sexually abusing Carroll in the 1990s and for defaming her when he denied it. He had sought to delay payment while pressing his appeals, but ran out of options after lower courts upheld the verdict and the Supreme Court declined to take the case.
This is the first of two Carroll awards to be resolved; a separate defamation verdict carrying a far larger sum remains on appeal. The payment closes off one line of litigation the president had fought to keep open, and it forecloses further delay on this portion of what he owes.
