Senate Democrats block the annual defense bill over Iran and Israel provisions
The Senate voted 50-46 to block a procedural motion to open debate on the 2027 National Defense Authorization Act, which would authorize $1.15 trillion in military spending. The tally fell well short of the 60 votes needed to advance, leaving the annual defense policy bill stalled. The NDAA usually passes with bipartisan support, so the blockade signals how far the fight over Trump’s Iran campaign has spread into routine legislation.
Democrats framed their objection around two issues. Minority Leader Chuck Schumer called the bill a “permission slip” for the president’s strikes on Iran, conducted without a fresh congressional authorization. Members also objected to provisions deepening U.S.-Israel military and intelligence integration — including joint weapons research, “data fusion” of intelligence sources, and expanded sharing under the companion intelligence authorization — which rights groups warned could fold Israeli surveillance programs into American systems. The standoff reflects a broader shift: favorability toward Israel among Democratic voters has fallen sharply in recent years, and the caucus is now willing to hold up must-pass defense legislation to press the point.
