In the most recent, an ICE agent shot and killed a Colombian man during an operation in Biddeford, Maine; days earlier, a man was fatally shot in a Houston encounter with federal agents. Both deaths are under investigation.
The step is a notable operational pullback for an agency that has expanded street-level enforcement under the administration’s deportation push. Traffic stops have been a common way for agents to locate and detain people, but they also generate the roadside confrontations that produced the two deaths and the resulting political and legal pressure.
