WHO says the DR Congo Ebola outbreak may be roughly double the official count
The World Health Organization said the Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo is likely far larger than official figures show, with a senior emergencies official reporting that around 80% of new cases are turning up outside known contact lists and that the real total may be roughly double the confirmed count.
That pattern is a warning sign for epidemiologists. When most new infections cannot be traced to a documented chain, it means transmission is running ahead of the response and that contact tracing — the core tool for containing Ebola — is not reaching enough people. Many patients are dying in their communities before ever reaching a treatment center, which both undercounts the toll and creates further exposure.
The update points to a widening gap between the response capacity on the ground and the spread of the virus, and it strengthens the case for surging tracing, testing and treatment resources into affected areas.
