Second US citizen with Ebola evacuated to Germany for treatment

The Hill

A second US citizen has contracted Ebola in the Democratic Republic of Congo’s outbreak and been evacuated to Frankfurt University Hospital for treatment, the World Health Organization said on July 13, according to The Hill . The patient is a humanitarian aid worker, the second American infected in an outbreak that has grown into one of the largest on record and killed hundreds.

Medical evacuations of infected foreign aid workers are standard practice and, with strict isolation, carry low onward-transmission risk in the receiving country. The infection of a second US aid worker underscores the exposure faced by responders and the strain on containment efforts in eastern Congo, where civil conflict has repeatedly disrupted the outbreak response.
