HHS drops plan to cut health funding over gender-affirming care
The Department of Health and Human Services will not finalize a proposed rule that would have stripped Medicare and Medicaid funding from health providers offering gender-affirming care to minors. The plan had threatened hospitals and clinics with the loss of federal reimbursement — a financial penalty severe enough to force many to drop the care entirely.
Backing off the rule removes, at least for now, one of the more sweeping levers the administration had considered using against gender-affirming care. Because Medicare and Medicaid dollars underpin the finances of most large hospital systems, conditioning that funding would have reached far beyond the relatively small number of patients directly involved. The retreat likely reflects the legal and operational difficulty of tying broad funding streams to a single category of care, though the administration has pursued the same goal through other channels, including investigations and pressure on individual hospitals.
