Astronomers detect the first true sugar molecule in space

Astronomers have reported the first detection of a true sugar molecule in space: erythrulose, a four-carbon sugar, identified in an interstellar cloud, according to Nature . Sugar-related molecules have been spotted before, but this is the first bona fide sugar found outside the Solar System.

The finding matters because sugars are among the building blocks of biological molecules such as RNA. Detecting one already present in the cold clouds from which stars and planets form strengthens the case that the raw chemistry for life can assemble in space and be delivered to young worlds, rather than arising only on planetary surfaces. It is a step in that argument, not proof of life; the result maps where prebiotic chemistry can occur, and does not show that it leads to biology.
