Zelenskyy replaces Ukraine's prime minister in wartime cabinet reshuffle
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced a government reshuffle on July 12, saying Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko will leave the post after a year in office. He said each priority in foreign policy would now be overseen by “a specific individual with substantial experience” capable of delivering on international agreements, and flagged accompanying changes to the leadership of law-enforcement agencies. A successor was not named.
Svyrydenko, 39, took over from Denys Shmyhal in July 2025 after serving as first deputy prime minister and economy minister. She is best known for negotiating the minerals-access agreement with the Trump administration that tied U.S. support to Ukrainian resource development.
The stated rationale points to where Kyiv now needs to convert commitments into deliveries: domestic Patriot air-defense manufacturing, movement on EU membership, and closer ties with Gulf partners who could supply financing and reconstruction capital. Recasting the cabinet around named officials for each track suggests Zelenskyy wants clearer accountability for follow-through as the war continues and external backing becomes more conditional. Parliament would still need to confirm the incoming government once nominations are made.
