At least 15 people were killed in landslides in the southern Philippines triggered by Typhoon Bavi , known locally as Inday. Ten died in Malapatan, Sarangani province, on Mindanao early Friday, and five more in Lanao del Sur. The storm did not make landfall in the Philippines but its outer bands drove the heavy rain, and forecasters warned of further flooding, including around Manila.
The super typhoon earlier struck Guam and the Northern Mariana Islands without casualties, then weakened as it crossed the Philippine Sea. It is now moving toward Taiwan, Japan, and China. Taiwan has evacuated hundreds and closed schools and offices, heavy rain has begun in Japan’s Ishikawa prefecture, and Bavi is forecast to make landfall in China after that.
