Bonnie Tyler, singer of 'Total Eclipse of the Heart,' dies at 75
Bonnie Tyler, the Welsh singer whose raspy voice powered some of the defining ballads of the 1980s, has died at 75. She died in hospital in Portugal, weeks after emergency surgery and a monthlong medically induced coma to treat a perforated intestine.
Born Gaynor Hopkins, Tyler broke through internationally with 1978’s “It’s a Heartache” and reached her commercial peak with “Total Eclipse of the Heart,” the lead single from her 1983 UK number-one album Faster Than the Speed of Night. That song sold more than 13 million copies worldwide; “Holding Out for a Hero,” from the Footloose soundtrack, followed a year later. She earned three Grammy nominations, represented Britain at Eurovision in 2013, and was recognized for her services to music in 2023.
