The FDA approved Trutakna , a treatment from Vera Therapeutics for IgA nephropathy, a chronic autoimmune disease in which antibody deposits inflame the kidneys’ filtering units and can gradually push patients toward kidney failure. The approval gives patients and nephrologists another option in a disease area that until recently had few therapies aimed at the underlying immune mechanism rather than just its downstream effects on blood pressure and protein loss.
The clearance is also the central near-term catalyst for Vera, a single-product company whose commercial prospects now hinge on how the drug is priced and adopted against a growing field of competing IgA nephropathy treatments.
