ICE officer fatally shoots man during Houston traffic stop
An Immigration and Customs Enforcement officer fatally shot a man during a vehicle stop in Houston on the morning of July 7, part of what the agency described as a targeted operation to arrest someone in the country illegally. The man was identified in local reporting as Lorenzo Salgado Araujo, who had lived in the city for decades.
The Department of Homeland Security said Salgado Araujo rammed an ICE vehicle, refused multiple commands, and “weaponized his vehicle,” and that the officer fired in self-defense. The DHS Office of Inspector General is leading the investigation into the shooting, while the FBI’s Houston field office sent an evidence team to examine a possible assault on a federal officer.
The case adds to scrutiny of use of force in expanded immigration enforcement, and reporting has noted that officials’ initial accounts of similar incidents have at times been complicated by later video evidence. The competing inquiries — one into the officer’s conduct, one into the driver’s — mean the official narrative may shift as evidence is reviewed.
