Tornadoes kill at least 17 in central China as Typhoon Bavi nears

Tornadoes tore through China’s Guangxi and Hubei provinces, killing at least 17 people — six in Guangxi and 11 in Hubei — and injuring hundreds, with more than 300 hurt in Hubei alone. Around 130,000 people were evacuated in Guangxi, where at least 40 rivers overflowed, and nearly 5,000 houses were damaged in Hubei. A tornado in Huanggang lifted trucks as high as 30 meters.

The damage compounds an unfolding weather emergency: Super Typhoon Bavi, packing sustained winds near 150 mph, is forecast to make landfall on China’s eastern coast by Thursday. The storm earlier battered US Pacific territories, cutting power to thousands. President Xi Jinping called for an “all-out” rescue effort.
