Study finds weak clinical oversight in online GLP-1 prescribing
Researchers using a “secret shopper” approach found that online platforms selling GLP-1 weight-loss drugs frequently issue prescriptions rapidly and with little of the clinical evaluation such medications normally warrant, according to a study published in JAMA and led by Yale investigators and reported by STAT News .
The pattern matters because GLP-1 drugs such as semaglutide and tirzepatide, while effective, carry real contraindications and side effects and require follow-up. Telehealth has made them far easier to obtain, but the study suggests convenience is coming at the expense of the screening and monitoring that would catch patients for whom the drugs are risky. The finding adds evidence to a debate regulators and insurers are already having about how tightly to police direct-to-consumer prescribing of the fast-growing class.
