Members of Patriot Front, a white nationalist group that experts describe as fascist and dedicated to establishing a white ethnostate, marched through the Washington, DC, area on July 4, the 250th anniversary of American independence. Senator Ed Markey called for condemnation, saying “we cannot be silent in the face of white nationalists marching in our nation’s capital.” No formal response from federal authorities was reported. Patriot Front formed after the 2017 Charlottesville rally and has built its public profile around brief, tightly choreographed marches designed to generate attention and recruitment footage while limiting exposure to counter-protesters.
Staging the march on the 250th anniversary, and in the capital, was a bid for maximum visibility on a day of national attention. Critics link the group’s growing boldness to political rhetoric that has normalized its themes, though the demonstration itself was small relative to the day’s official events.
