China expands research grants aimed at young scientists

Nature

China’s National Natural Science Foundation said it will fund roughly 12,000 additional projects starting this year, with the increase weighted toward grants for young scientists. The foundation is the country’s main channel for basic-research funding, and award rates for early-career applicants have been low enough that securing a first grant is a recognized bottleneck in Chinese academic careers.

Expanding the pool eases that pressure at the margins and signals Beijing’s continued emphasis on domestic basic research as it competes with the United States and Europe for scientific output. Whether the added grants meaningfully change success rates will depend on how fast the applicant pool grows alongside them.
