Russian strike on Kyiv kills at least 17 as Ukraine hits Moscow's oil sector
Russian missiles and drones struck Kyiv overnight, killing at least 17 people and wounding dozens more in what city officials described as the most destructive attack on the capital since the war began. Kyiv’s mayor declared a day of mourning as rescue crews worked through residential buildings hit in the barrage.
The scale of the assault comes as Ukraine sustains its own campaign against Russia’s energy infrastructure, launching repeated long-range drone strikes on refineries and fuel depots deep inside Russia. Those strikes have begun to bite: fuel shortages and rationing have been reported in parts of Russia as refinery output is disrupted.
The exchange underscores how both sides are now targeting the other’s core infrastructure — Russia hammering Ukrainian cities, Ukraine squeezing the oil sector that funds Moscow’s war — even as intermittent diplomatic contacts continue without a ceasefire.
