EU imposes 4.1bn-euro fine on Google over Android market abuse
The European Union confirmed a 4.1-billion-euro fine against Google, concluding that the company leveraged the market dominance of Android — the operating system that runs most of the world’s smartphones — to block competitors. Regulators pointed to the conditions Google placed on device makers, including bundling its own search and browser apps, as the mechanism that entrenched its position.
The penalty is among the heaviest the bloc has handed a US technology firm and caps a long-running case. For Google, the more consequential question is behavioral: fines of this size are absorbable against its revenue, but requirements to loosen how Android is licensed to manufacturers would reach further, potentially opening the default-app and app-store arrangements that steer users toward Google services.
