Bomb in central Damascus cafe kills at least six
An explosive device went off inside a cafe on Al-Nasser Street in the al-Marjah district of central Damascus at around 3:24pm local time on Wednesday, killing at least six people and injuring 22, Syria’s health ministry said. The site sits roughly 40 meters from the Palace of Justice.
Authorities had not named a perpetrator, but security officials attributed the attack to anti-government elements seeking to destabilize the country, saying forces have been working to uncover sleeper cells. Police cordoned off the area and began reviewing surveillance footage. Damascus Governor Maher Marwan said “those who shed the blood of Syrians will pay” and acknowledged that securing the country fully would take time.
The bombing is a reminder that the post-Assad government still faces armed opposition and internal security threats as it tries to consolidate control, months after the leadership change.
