Supreme Court leaves Trump liable in E. Jean Carroll case as Carroll moves to collect
The Supreme Court on Monday declined, without noted dissents, to hear President Trump’s appeal of the 2023 civil verdict in which a Manhattan jury found him liable for sexually abusing E. Jean Carroll in the 1990s and for defaming her when he denied her account. The refusal exhausts Trump’s appeals in that case and leaves the $5 million award standing. Carroll’s lawyers then asked the trial court to release the money, which they say has grown to nearly $5.8 million with accrued interest.
A separate $83.3 million defamation judgment from a second Carroll trial remains on its own appellate track, so this ruling resolves only the smaller of the two awards. The practical effect is narrow but concrete: after years of appeals, a sitting president now faces court-ordered payment on a jury finding of sexual abuse.
