HHS cancels most teen pregnancy prevention grants and redirects the money
The Department of Health and Human Services canceled most of its teen pregnancy prevention grants , ending 53 of 67 awards worth roughly $68 million and affecting grantees — universities, community groups, local health departments and Planned Parenthood affiliates — in more than two dozen states. The grants were terminated two years before their scheduled expiration on the grounds that the programs no longer aligned with agency priorities, with officials describing some curricula as medically inaccurate and age-inappropriate.
HHS is redirecting the reclaimed money into two new funding streams, together about $71.7 million, with applications due July 23. The maneuver closely mirrors a 2017 action during the first Trump administration, when HHS cut grants to more than 80 recipients early; courts later found that move violated agency regulations and issued a permanent injunction. That precedent leaves the current terminations open to a similar legal challenge.
