Germany charges Ukrainian national over Nord Stream pipeline blasts
German prosecutors filed charges against a Ukrainian national, identified as Serhii K, over the 2022 explosions that ruptured the Nord Stream pipelines beneath the Baltic Sea. Prosecutors allege he led a seven-member crew that placed the explosives, and have charged him with causing an explosion, destroying structures, and — because the attack came after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine — a war crime for striking civilian energy infrastructure. He was arrested in Italy last summer, extradited to Germany in November, and has denied involvement.
The indictment moves the long-running investigation from suspicion to a formal case, and it lands awkwardly for Kyiv. Ukraine has denied any role in the sabotage, but a German war-crimes prosecution naming a Ukrainian citizen puts Berlin — one of Kyiv’s principal backers — in the position of trying an alleged act against infrastructure that once carried Russian gas to Germany. No party has admitted responsibility for the blasts.
