Gunman kills six at a youth welfare centre in Stade, Germany
A gunman killed six people and wounded another at a youth welfare centre in Stade, in Lower Saxony about 50km west of Hamburg, on June 29. According to Al Jazeera and PBS NewsHour , the attack took place in the group-home section of a mother-and-child facility. The six dead — four women and two men — were employees of the centre or of the local Jugendamt (youth welfare office).
Police described the shooting as rooted in a custody dispute: the suspect had an appointment to discuss arrangements for his three-month-old daughter. The child and her mother were present but were not hit. The suspect was arrested after fleeing in a car driven by a woman said to be close to his family; a second person was also detained.
The case is being treated as a targeted attack rather than a public rampage, which Germany has nonetheless seen rise in recent years. Beyond the immediate toll, it points to the risk concentrated in family-services settings, where staff mediate high-conflict custody cases with little protection.
