Vaccine elicits broadly neutralizing HIV antibodies in primates
A study published in Nature on June 30 reports that a step-wise vaccination regimen elicited broadly neutralizing antibodies against HIV in non-human primates — antibodies able to block divergent strains of a virus whose extreme variability has defeated vaccine efforts for four decades.
Generating these antibodies has been the central obstacle in HIV vaccine design: they arise from rare B-cell precursors that standard immunizations fail to engage. The work uses germline-targeting immunogens to prime those precursors and guide their maturation, and a companion paper focused on antibodies against the virus’s vulnerable envelope “apex” was published alongside it. Demonstrating the approach in outbred primates, rather than specially engineered mice, is what makes the result notable.
This is a proof of principle, not a vaccine. The responses must still be reproduced and shown to be protective in humans, a process of years. But it strengthens the case for the germline-targeting strategy now being tested in early human trials and offers a template that could apply to other fast-mutating pathogens.
