Guo Wengui sentenced to 30 years for a $1 billion fraud

NPR

Guo Wengui, the self-exiled Chinese businessman who recast himself as a prominent U.S.-based critic of the Chinese Communist Party, was sentenced on June 29 to 30 years in federal prison, NPR reported . U.S. District Judge Analisa Torres handed down the sentence in Manhattan after a jury convicted Guo of nine of 12 counts following a seven-week trial.

Prosecutors said Guo persuaded hundreds of thousands of followers to put more than $1 billion into entities he controlled — including GTV Media Group, the Himalaya Farm Alliance and the Himalaya Exchange — and diverted the money to fund a lavish lifestyle. The government called him “entirely unrepentant,” and said the fraud, running from 2018 to 2023, left many victims financially and emotionally devastated.

Guo built his U.S. profile partly through his alliance with Steve Bannon; in 2020 the two announced a joint effort to topple the Chinese government. The sentence closes a long-running case that blended exile politics, media ventures and a crypto-flavored investment scheme aimed largely at Chinese-diaspora followers.
