Kenyan rights groups say detained protesters were tortured and dumped
Six people detained during Thursday’s anniversary protests in Kenya were found dumped in different parts of Nairobi on Saturday with injuries consistent with abuse in custody, rights groups said, while a seventh protester remains missing, Al Jazeera reported . Amnesty International Kenya demanded “an immediate, independent and impartial investigation,” saying those responsible must be held accountable.
The demonstrations marked the second anniversary of the June 2024 protests against a finance bill, during which security forces killed roughly 60 people. Interior Minister Kipchumba Murkomen said about 355 people were arrested across the country on Thursday, with many appearing in court the following day. The government has not publicly addressed the torture allegations.
The reports fit a documented pattern of police violence and enforced disappearances around Kenya’s protest movements, and add to pressure on authorities over how detainees are treated in custody.
