North Korea commissions its largest-ever warship
North Korea commissioned a roughly 5,000-tonne destroyer on Wednesday, the largest warship it has fielded, with leader Kim Jong Un saying the vessel can carry nuclear-capable missiles. State messaging framed it as part of a plan to sharply expand the navy over the next five years.
A destroyer of this size marks a step up from Pyongyang’s traditionally coastal fleet toward larger surface combatants. Pairing that platform with claimed nuclear-capable missiles fits North Korea’s broader push to diversify how it can deliver a warhead, beyond its land-based missile force. Such claims are difficult to verify independently, and a single ship does little to change the regional balance against far larger South Korean, Japanese and U.S. fleets — but it signals the direction of Kim’s military investment.
