France confirms its first Ebola case in the current outbreak
France’s health ministry confirmed on Wednesday that a doctor returning from humanitarian work in the Democratic Republic of Congo has tested positive for Ebola — the first case linked to the central African outbreak to reach Europe. The patient was isolated on arrival and transferred to hospital under secure conditions, and authorities are tracing close contacts, who will be asked to self-isolate for 21 days.
The outbreak, centered in DRC’s Ituri province since May, is caused by the Bundibugyo strain and has infected more than 1,000 people and killed over 260, with spillover cases in Uganda. The WHO declared it a public health emergency of international concern in May. There is no approved vaccine or treatment for the Bundibugyo strain, which complicates containment.
A single imported case in a high-capacity health system is contained more easily than community spread in a conflict zone, and France’s rapid isolation and contact-tracing reflect that. The development still raises the profile of an outbreak that has been difficult to control on the ground, and underscores how international travel by responders can carry the virus far from its source.
