Trump signs executive orders to expand quantum research and security

The Hill

President Trump signed executive orders intended to speed up quantum computing research and bolster security around the technology. The action treats quantum as both an economic-competitiveness priority and a national-security concern.

The security dimension is the more immediate driver. Large-scale quantum computers, if built, could break much of the public-key cryptography that protects today’s communications and financial systems — a prospect that has pushed governments to fund “post-quantum” encryption and to track foreign progress. Directing federal resources toward research and security at once is an attempt to stay ahead of a capability that does not yet exist at scale but would be difficult to defend against once it does.
