FDA-cleared AI tool to screen for structural heart disease from ECGs reaches clinicians
An FDA-cleared AI system called EchoNext is being made available to clinicians through the OpenEvidence platform, where it analyzes standard electrocardiogram images to screen for seven types of structural heart disease. The pitch is that a widely used, low-cost test — the ECG — can be mined by a model to surface conditions that routine human reads frequently miss, prompting earlier follow-up imaging such as echocardiograms.
The rollout illustrates how AI diagnostics are increasingly being layered onto existing diagnostic infrastructure rather than requiring new hardware, which lowers the barrier to deployment.
