Explosion at Qatar's Ras Laffan LNG hub injures 54, leaves 18 missing
An explosion at the Barzan facility in Qatar’s Ras Laffan Industrial City injured 54 people and left 18 missing on June 22, the government said . Qatar’s Ministry of Interior attributed the blast to a technical malfunction and said there was no leak posing a danger to public safety.
Ras Laffan, about 50 miles north of Doha, is the world’s largest liquefied natural gas export complex and underpins a hub that supplies roughly a fifth of global LNG. QatarEnergy had already invoked force majeure earlier this year after Iranian attacks in March disrupted shipments to customers in Italy, Belgium, South Korea and China.
The immediate human toll is the priority, but the incident also tests an export system that European and Asian buyers rely on. Qatar’s statement that there was no leakage suggests limited damage to production for now; any sign that processing capacity is impaired would matter for LNG prices in a market already strained by this year’s disruptions.
