Google invests $75 million in A24 to build AI filmmaking tools
Google is investing about $75 million in the independent studio A24 and pairing it with its DeepMind unit to develop AI-powered filmmaking tools, Variety reported on June 22 . The arrangement gives A24 access to DeepMind’s research and infrastructure, while DeepMind researchers help the studio build new production workflows.
Notably, the deal does not grant Google access to A24’s film library or its data — a boundary that addresses a central anxiety in the industry, where studios and creators have resisted handing training material to AI developers. The investment is reported to match the valuation set by Thrive Capital in A24’s previous funding round.
The structure points to where studio-AI partnerships may be headed: technology firms get a marquee creative partner to develop and showcase production tools, while the studio keeps its content rights and gains advanced capabilities without becoming a data source. It also extends the contest among AI labs to embed their models inside Hollywood production pipelines.
