Toy Story 5 opens to $71 million, heading for franchise-best weekend

Variety

Pixar’s Toy Story 5 opened to $71 million on Friday from 4,425 theaters, easily topping the box office. Forecasters project a three-day weekend of roughly $150 million, and as high as $175 million — enough to set a franchise-best opening , surpassing Toy Story 4’s $120 million debut in 2019.

The result matters for Disney’s math. The film carries a reported $250 million production budget before marketing, so a strong start is needed to reach profitability. Returning leads Tom Hanks, Tim Allen and Joan Cusack are joined by new voice cast including Greta Lee and Keanu Reeves, in a story that pits Buzz and Woody against an “edutainment” smart tablet.
