Zimbabwe lawmakers back bill to extend the president's term

The lower house of Zimbabwe’s parliament voted on June 18 to back legislation extending the presidential term from five to seven years, Al Jazeera reports . The measure adds two years to the term currently held by President Emmerson Mnangagwa.

Lengthening a sitting president’s term is a familiar mechanism for stretching incumbency without formally abolishing limits, and it sharpens an existing succession contest within the ruling ZANU-PF party. The bill still requires further passage and, depending on its provisions, possible constitutional thresholds before taking effect, so its ultimate reach — and whether it applies to the current term — remains to be settled.
