Somaliland opens embassy in Jerusalem after Israeli recognition

Somaliland has opened an embassy in Jerusalem, about six months after Israel recognised the territory’s independence. Somaliland broke away from Somalia in 1991 but has spent decades without formal recognition from the wider international community, which still treats it as part of Somalia.
Placing the embassy in Jerusalem — rather than Tel Aviv, where most countries keep their missions — signals that Somaliland is willing to align closely with Israel in exchange for the recognition it has long sought. For Israel, backing a self-governing state on the Gulf of Aden gains a partner near a strategic shipping corridor. The arrangement is likely to draw objections from Somalia, which regards Somaliland’s diplomacy as illegitimate.
