Israeli strikes kill four in southern Lebanon as ceasefire questions linger

Al Jazeera

Israeli drone strikes hit vehicles in the towns of Mayfadoun and Shoukin in southern Lebanon’s Nabatieh governorate on June 16, killing at least four people, according to Lebanon’s National News Agency cited by Al Jazeera .

The attacks came despite the recent US-Iran agreement meant to end the war on all fronts. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said the war “has not fully come to an end” without an Israeli withdrawal from territory seized during the conflict, while Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu signaled Israel intends to keep forces inside occupied southern Lebanese areas. The gap between a top-line agreement and conditions on the ground — continued strikes, no withdrawal — is why residents and officials remain skeptical the truce will hold. Since fighting resumed on March 2, Israeli attacks have killed at least 3,826 people in Lebanon, the health ministry says.
